Marital Advice, Please!

Why does my wife buy spinach when we have a garden full of it?

"Cause it was only 88 cents a box?" she asks lamely.

Hi There!

I'm a cheap, lazy (or so my wife tells me) but passionate gardener who loves to try to grow new flowers, fruits and veggies in new and different ways. But gimmicks that don't work drive me crazy!

I'm going to let you in on things I've tried, what I found that works, and what doesn't.

There's a right way, and a wrong way. I'll point the way for you.

FYI, so you know where I'm coming from:

-I'm mostly organic, especially in my edible gardens, but I "backslide" into chemicals on my lawn for fertilizers and weed control. (Maybe you can convert me to full organic.)

-I live in suburban Dallas, TX, (Zone 8) a sunny, hot climate, with heavy clay for topsoil. (This stuff holds a shape so well, we should sell it as material for sculpters.) But I've had gardens in Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia, and I think many of the gimmicks and products I talk about are popular or marketed around the country.

So I followed my own advice, and got gardening this weekend.

Put in 50' row of snow peas along the driveway/backyard wall. (This has been a great spot for everything from peas to Morning Glories to cukes.)

Planted a couple of Arugula (4" pots.) Love the strong woody taste.

Planted a rosemary bush.

Garden is coming to life; daffodils and other bulbs heading up, ready to bud in sunny souther spots, 4" tall and coming on the north.

This is going to be my garden journal, something every gardener should do, (which I have failed to do so far.)

I promise to tell you what succeeds and what fails, and my best guess as to why it happened.
