30 Days of Tomato Tips!

If there's one thing every vegetable gardener wants to grow, it's tomatoes. Unfortunately, growing tomatoes in Texas is no easy trick. I'll be honest, I've had mixed results. Some of the tips to come are specific to north Texas, but you bright folks in Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, etc. can figure out what works in your neighborhood.

BTW- If I'm going to come up with 30 tomato tips, I'm going to need your help! Send me your best tip today!

Day 1 - Tip One - IF YOU'RE IN TEXAS, PLANT TODAY (no April fooling!)

Look on the transplants in garden centers. It says something like "Days to Production." That's from the day you plant the transplant to getting fruit.

Tomatoes stop setting fruit (turning a flower or bud into a tomato) when temperatures regularly reach 85 to 90 degrees.

Most of the tomatoes for sale take about 55-80 days to production. That's at least late May, when temperatures are just hitting that mark around here. If you don't have fruit on the vine by that time, it's gonna be a long wait.
